Did you know you can have the same salon quality products I use on your skin at home? Extend your results from your facial by ensuring you have the best quality products to use on your skin at home.
Let’s learn about oil cleansing, the products I use on you in your facial and why you should be using them at home to extend your glowing fresh results beyond the bed.
Is oil cleansing all it’s cracked up to be?
Want clear skin? No lotions or potions are going to work properly on the skin if you don’t cleanse it properly. Think of it like buying a really lovely serum and then pouring it down the drain, you wouldn’t do that? So why would you put it on skin that hasn’t been properly prepped. You want to see real results with your skin? Start cleansing it properly.
Why oil cleansing?
Oil cleansing is the king of cleansing. Oil cleansing doesn’t strip natural oils from your face, it retains moisture and protects the lipid barrier of the skin, meaning your skin barrier isn’t compromised. It gently breaks down SPF, make-up, free radicals (pollution from the air), oil and sweat on the surface of the skin and removes it better than other cleansers. Oil cleansing is often gentler than other cleansing methods because it doesn't contain skin hating sodium lauryl sulfates (SLS), sodium laureth sulfates (SLES) or other harsh, unnecessary chemicals – particularly if you choose Pinks Boutique who promise to be free of sulfates and other health compromising ingredients like parabens. Sulfates and parabens have been getting a bad rep recently, and for good reason. Sulfates are the chemical foaming agent they put in skincare to make it nice and bubbly when it interacts with water, this has a lovely effect (who doesn’t love a bubble bath), but it is no good for our skin, particularly on our face. It strips away natural oils from the skin, leaving it feeling dry, irritated and ultimately, malnourished. Parabens are known endocrine disrupters, meaning they disrupt the normal balance of hormones, which can lead to fertility issues, breast cancer and a whole host of other health and skin issues.
Using the wrong cleanser can exacerbate problems within your skin by disrupting the skin barrier, leading to excess dryness or oil. Over a long period of time, this can ultimately lead to more serious skin problems such as acne or dermatitis.
How does oil cleansing work and why is it better than other cleansing methods?
Oils are lipophilic which means they are naturally attracted to other oils, including the sebum in our skin and oil-like ingredients in make-up and SPF. This means that when we cleanse with an oil cleanser, all of the make-up, SPF, dirt, sweat and excess oils from the day are carefully lifted from the skin by the oil. It is better than other cleansers because it protects the delicate skin barrier, doesn’t unbalance pH levels, protects the lipid barrier and (normally) doesn't contain other harsh chemicals the skin just doesn’t need - always check the label on other products, but you know you are safe with ALL products from Pinks Boutique. Cleansing with an oil cleanser does not leave the skin with that horrible tight, dry, hot feeling where you can’t wait to slap on your nearest moisturiser. It helps to lock in moisture and hydration by leaving the skins natural oils where they should be.
When should I oil cleanse?
It is best to oil cleanse at the end of the day as it works wonders to remove make-up, SPF and dirt and grime from the day. It is normally unnecessary to oil cleanse in the morning, unless you have extremely oily skin or you have been sweating during the night.
How to oil cleanse
Step 1: Take your chosen oil cleanser and apply it with fingers to a dry face. It is vital that you don’t have a wet face because we do not want to emulsify the oil before it has had chance to work its magic. The action of emulsifying is to add water to turn it into a creamy liquid that is easier to remove from the face, this also helps the oil to lift impurities and dirt from the skin, giving it a really deep cleanse.
Step 2: Massage the oil into the face for a good couple of minutes, particularly if you have been wearing make-up and SPF. This ensures you are lifting everything off the surface of the skin and massaging cleanser deep into the pores. If you have areas of blackheads, acne or sebaceous filaments, then focus on these areas more during your cleanse.
Step 3: Run some warm water from the tap and wet your fingertips. Now massage the water into the oil on your face to encourage it to emulsify (most cleansers have an added agent in them to help the oil mix with the water). This turns the oil into a creamy liquid and makes it easier to wash off the skin and ensures all the make-up and dirt comes with it.
Step 4: Using a damp flannel or a muslin cloth, remove the emulsified oil from your face, rinse and repeat until you are beautifully clean.
I do recommend double cleansing in the evening. This means cleansing the skin with an oil cleanser followed by a lighter weight oil-based cleanser or water-based cleanser as a lighter second cleanse, just to ensure you have removed all your make-up and grime from the day. If you are new to a two-step cleanse routine, you can cleanse twice with your Pinks Boutique oil balm, just ensure you remove with a flannel to get it all off your skin.
Choosing the right one for you skin type.
Do you know your skin type?
How to tell your skin type – wash your face and pat it dry. Look in the mirror to inspect your skin. If you skin still looks shiny all over, there is visible sebum and it feels greasy to touch, you have oily skin. If your skin only has these features on your forehead, nose and chin but your skin on the rest of you face feels tight, dry, flaky or has no symptoms, then you have combination skin. If you skin feels very tight, is shiny but dry, is flaky, looks white/pale on the surface or feels dry and textured to touch, then you have dry skin. If your skin reacts to certain ingredients or products or often becomes red, irritated or flaky then is it likely you have sensitive skin.
